The MM5.2 is essentially a 5 string version of the MM4.2. It features all of the same technical aspects of the 4.2, including alnico V magnets and heavy Formvar wire, which is what supplies it with the punch of its powerful low end and dark, scoopy midrange. This pickup will summon 70s style tone that illustrates the unique, darkened texture of the MusicMan style; and its beefy presence will combat any clank that can sometimes be found in high-end bass frequencies. The MM5.2 can be wired in series, parallel, or single coil (split-able).

Technical Details:

  • Hum-canceling split coil 5 string Music Man-type bass pickup.
  • Drop-in replacement MusicMan bass pickup.
  • Available in Alnico III or V magnets:
    • Alnico V: all around brighter, punchier, and meaner (Standard).
  • Laser cut, fiber bobbins.
  • Wax-potted to contain any unruly frequency that may attempt to desecrate your desired tone.
  • Given that the industry does not have a standard spacing for this style of pickup, we offer three different spacing and cover combinations:
    • Soap bar shape with no ears and narrow spacing. These have a rectangular cover and narrow spacing that will work on original Music Man five string: 17.5mm
    • Larger shape with ears and wide spacing. These will fit Lakland and other basses with a wide spacing: 19mm
    • Larger shape with ears and narrow spacing. These will fit OLP (not the OLP Tony Levin signature model) and other basses with a narrow spacing: 15.25mm
    • Custom spacings are available upon request.

  • MM5 Wide Shape:

    Length: 4.60” (116.84 mm)

    Width: 1.90” (48.26 mm)

  • MM5 Narrow:

    Length: 4.42” (112.14 mm)

    Width: 1.95” (49.53 mm)

History: The MM5.2 comes from the same concept as the MM4.2: reach back through time into the renowned 70s Music Man design, deconstruct its tone, pick out everything bellowing, scoopy, and zingy, and put it all back together in an apparatus that can contain its pleasant pulverization. This pickup was fabricated in Redlands, CA, by a group of maniacally meticulous players and craftsmen.
